The Airspace Check in Rotor Rate: UASFM, B4UFLY, TFRs, and a Full Step-by-Step LAANC Submission Walkthrough

A button-by-button tour of the airspace check, plus a full walkthrough of submitting an automatic airspace authorization — what you need first, the general flow, and notes on each major provider.

The Airspace card in Rotor Rate is the panel I tap on every single job, no matter how routine it looks. Class G doesn't mean "no surprises" — it means "no Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) required." Those are different things.

This is a button-by-button tour of what each link does, what it's actually pulling from, and a full walkthrough of the LAANC handoff — including the step-by-step submission flow inside each of the three USS providers Rotor Rate links to, what you have to set up beforehand, and the traps that keep first-time pilots from getting an approval.

There's a lot to cover, please joing me as we step through it.

What the card pulls in automatically

The moment a job has a lat/lng (derived from the address you entered in job location), Rotor Rate queries the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)'s public UASFM (Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Facility Map) ArcGIS feature server and returns:

  • Whether the point sits inside a controlled-airspace grid cell (Class B/C/D/E surface) or not.
  • The posted LAANC ceiling in feet Above Ground Level (AGL) for that cell.
  • The controlling airport identifier (when applicable).

This is the same source the FAA-approved UAS Service Supplier (USS) providers (Aloft, Airspace Link, Autopylot) read from. It's the source of truth — the chart you see on every other "drone map" website is downstream of it. (FAA UAS Facility Map)

A few honest caveats:

  • UASFM cells refresh on the FAA chart cycle (roughly every 56 days). Rotor Rate caches the lookup for 24 hours per location to be polite to the FAA's server.
  • A 0 ft ceiling does NOT mean "you can't fly." It means LAANC won't auto-approve any altitude there — you need a Further Coordination request through FAA DroneZone or your USS, which is reviewed by ATC and can take up to 90 days. (FAA LAANC)
  • "Class G" on the map means the FAA didn't draw a controlled-airspace polygon there. It does not mean there's no TFR, no NOTAM, no stadium, and no special-use airspace. Use the buttons below for those.

Button by button

B4UFLY (via Aloft)

The FAA's recommended pre-flight situational-awareness tool, hosted by Aloft. The link drops you at your job coordinates with the date/time of your mission already in the URL parameters so the overlay shows whatever Notices to Air Missions (NOTAMs) and Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) apply to that window, not just "right now." Use it for: TFRs, NOTAMs, special-use airspace, stadiums, national parks, prohibited areas — the layered situational picture. If you only click one external link, click this one.

FAA UASFM (UAS Facility Map)

The official FAA viewer, opened zoomed to your site. This is what you cross-check against if the Rotor Rate summary says something surprising — the official map is the tie-breaker.

SkyVector

Sectional/IFR chart, pinned to the site. Useful for the questions a UASFM grid won't answer: nearby airports, Military Operations Area (MOAs), restricted areas, victor airways, terrain. If you're flying near anything that looks unusual on the airspace summary, eyeballing the sectional takes ten seconds and frequently catches something.

FAA Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) Search

Goes to the official NOTAM search pre-filtered for the nearest airport ICAO and the mission window. Stadium TFRs, sporting-event TFRs (Special Event Airspace Management System (SEAMS)), VIP movement TFRs, fire TFRs, and one-off restrictions all surface here.

SEAMS / Sporting-Event Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) awareness

The NOTAM search above is how you actually find a sporting-event TFR for your date. If you're flying anywhere near a college stadium, MLB park, NASCAR track, or major motorsport venue on game day, this is non-optional — these are some of the most-violated TFRs in the country.

The LAANC review step — what it does and what it doesn't

Here's where I have to be straight with you, because the in-app info is precise but it's easy to mis-read.

What it does:

  • Pre-fills a review dialog with mission date, start time, duration, and altitude (capped at the UASFM ceiling).
  • Lets you edit any of those before handing off.
  • Generates a clean, formatted request summary and copies it to your clipboard, with field labels that match the USS form you're about to land in (Aloft uses one set of labels, Airspace Link another, Autopylot another — Rotor Rate matches all three).
  • Opens the USS map at your exact coordinates in a new tab.
  • Keeps a history of your recent handoffs so you can re-open one.

What it does NOT do:

  • It does not auto-fill the actual LAANC request form inside the USS.
  • It does not submit a LAANC request on your behalf.

The reason is simple: none of the three USS providers we link to publishes a public deep-link or parameter schema for the LAANC fields, and becoming a LAANC USS yourself requires a formal FAA Memorandum of Agreement and ongoing audits. (FAA LAANC USS list) Rotor Rate is not a LAANC USS and never claims to be. What we do is get you to the right map pin with a paste-ready summary so the form fill is essentially mechanical — paste, eyeball, submit. The actual authorization is between you and your USS.

If a competitor's product claims one-click LAANC submission and they're not on the FAA's approved USS list, ask them which schema they're using. There isn't one.

Before you ever open Rotor Rate (a little BTS of LAANC)

LAANC is a partnership between the FAA and approved private companies. The FAA owns the airport data and the rules; the USS runs the app you actually submit through. There is no FAA login that submits LAANC — only the USS apps do that. (FAA: About LAANC)

You need three things in place before the Airspace card's LAANC handoff is useful:

  1. A current Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate (or be flying under recreational LAANC, which is a separate, narrower flow). The USS will ask for the certificate number on your first submission and store it on your profile. (FAA: Become a Drone Pilot)
  2. A registered aircraft in FAA DroneZone with the registration number. Don't even think of flying under Part 107 with an unregistered drone; it's only $5 and can save you a world of hurt (Pilot Institute offers free stickers...no excuses folks).
  3. An account with at least one LAANC USS, already verified. First-time signup includes identity verification and, depending on the provider, a payment method on file for paid waiver upgrades. Do this at home, not in the field with a client standing there.

If any of those three are missing, the pre-filled summary in Rotor Rate has nowhere to land.

The general LAANC flow (works in any USS)

Every approved USS surfaces the same FAA-mandated fields. Once you know the shape, the per-provider differences are mostly cosmetic. (FAA Part 107 §107.41)

  1. Open the provider from the Airspace card (web button on desktop, or the provider's mobile app if you're already on site).
  2. Sign in. You should already be signed in from the home setup above. If the deep link bounces you to a login page, that's the moment people lose the pre-filled context — sign in first, then click the Airspace card button again.
  3. Drop a pin or draw an operating area at the coordinates the Rotor Rate summary shows. Aloft and Airspace Link both accept lat/lng paste; Autopylot prefers a tapped pin.
  4. Enter the operation window. Paste from the clipboard: date, start time, duration, end time. Confirm the timezone the app uses — most default to the device's local zone, which is what Rotor Rate generates.
  5. Set max altitude AGL. This must be ≤ the UASFM ceiling shown in Rotor Rate for an instant approval. Above that ceiling you're requesting Further Coordination, which is reviewed by Air Traffic Control (ATC) and not instant.
  6. Attach pilot and aircraft. Part 107 certificate number and registered aircraft from your USS profile.
  7. Submit. Auto-approved requests come back in seconds with a confirmation number. Save that number to the job notes in Rotor Rate — the authorization itself lives in the USS, not in Rotor Rate.

The single most common failure mode: submitting for an altitude that exceeds the grid's auto-auth ceiling. The app silently converts it to a Further Coordination request, you fly thinking you're approved, and you weren't. Always cross-check the ceiling Rotor Rate shows against what the USS confirms on the review screen before you tap submit.

Per-provider notes

Aloft (Air Aware) — web + iOS + Android

Aloft is the most-used USS and runs both a web map (app.aloft.ai) and the Air Aware mobile apps. The Rotor Rate button drops you on the web map centered at the job site. From the field, opening Air Aware on a phone and pasting the coordinates is faster than the web flow on a small screen.

  • Best for: pilots who want one tool for both LAANC and B4UFLY-style situational awareness, since Aloft also hosts the FAA's B4UFLY service.
  • Field labels in the clipboard text: "Operation date," "Operation time," "Maximum altitude (AGL)" — they map directly to the Air Aware form.
  • Watch out for: Air Aware on mobile opens a "New flight" wizard by default; if the deep link from the desktop button shows the map but no wizard, you're meant to draw your operation area first, then tap "Request LAANC."

Airspace Link (AirHub Portal) — web

Airspace Link's pilot-facing product is the AirHub Portal, which is web-only for pilots. The Rotor Rate button drops you on the map at the job site coordinates. The portal expects a polygon or radius operating area rather than a single pin, so be ready to draw a small circle around the pasted coordinates.

  • Best for: desk planning the day before, especially for sites near multiple controlling facilities where seeing every overlapping grid in one view matters.
  • Field labels in the clipboard text: "Mission date," "Start time," "Max altitude AGL."
  • Watch out for: the portal is web-only — there's no mobile app to fall back on. If you're on a phone in the field, switch to Aloft or Autopylot.

Autopylot — iOS + Android, with a web companion

Autopylot is mobile-first and popular with pilots who want a stripped-down LAANC submission with built-in flight logging. The Rotor Rate button opens the web companion; on a phone, open the Autopylot app directly instead and paste the coordinates from the clipboard text — the mobile flow is meaningfully faster than the web version.

  • Best for: field pilots who want LAANC and a flight log in one app.
  • Field labels in the clipboard text: "Flight date," "Start time," "Max altitude (AGL)."
  • Watch out for: Autopylot doesn't expose a documented lat/lng pre-fill URL, so the deep link only lands you in the app — coordinates are paste-only. That's intentional on their end, not a Rotor Rate limitation.

When LAANC won't auto-approve

Two cases where the Airspace card warns you and the USS will refuse instant approval:

  1. Grid ceiling is 0 ft. Some controlled grids — usually right under the approach end of a runway — have no auto-authorization at all. You need a Further Coordination request submitted through any USS or directly through FAA DroneZone, which is reviewed by ATC and can take up to 90 days.
  2. Airport doesn't accept LAANC. Some controlling facilities haven't opted in. The UASFM `APT1_LAANC` flag is what Rotor Rate uses to detect this — when it's 0, no USS can help and DroneZone is the only path.

In both cases, don't fly assuming instant approval will land in your inbox. Plan around the timeline.

Pricing notes

LAANC submissions themselves are free — that's a deliberate FAA design choice. (FAA: About LAANC) USS providers monetize through paid tiers: in-app waiver tooling, team/fleet management, advanced flight logging, KMZ exports. The free tier of all three providers we link to is sufficient for the Part 107 pilot doing one LAANC at a time. You will not be asked for a credit card to submit a near-instant LAANC.

If a USS prompts you for payment on the submission screen, you've probably crossed into a paid feature (waiver request, recurring authorization, fleet). Back out and re-submit as a standard one-time LAANC.

How I actually use it — the 60-second loop

Per job, in order:

  1. Address into the job inputs. UASFM check runs automatically.
  2. Glance at the verdict color: green (Class G, no LAANC), amber (controlled with a ceiling), red (controlled with 0 ft ceiling — further coordination required).
  3. Open B4UFLY for the date/time of the mission. Confirm no TFR/NOTAM crashes the window.
  4. If controlled, hit Review LAANC request, sanity-check the auto-filled altitude and time, Copy the summary, and click the provider button you're already signed into.
  5. In the USS: paste, draw the operating area, attach pilot + aircraft, submit.
  6. Save the USS confirmation number into the Rotor Rate job notes.

The whole sequence — including the USS submission — takes longer to describe than to do once your USS account is set up and your aircraft is registered. That's the point: airspace research is the kind of work that gets skipped when it takes ten clicks. When it takes two, it gets done every time, and the bid you send goes out with the legal piece already nailed down.
