Weather in Rotor Rate: Picking a Mission Window and When to Cross-Check on UAV Forecast

How to read the built-in weather check before a flight: what the wind-up-high number really means, how to pick a good flying window, and when to double-check on UAV Forecast for a deeper look.

The Weather card in Rotor Rate exists for one reason: to answer the only weather question that matters when you're pricing a job — can I actually fly this on the day the client wants?

Everything else (whether it's pretty out, whether it'll rain Sunday) is noise. This post walks through how the card scores your specific mission window, what each number is telling you, and when to cross-check it on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Forecast for a deeper second opinion.

What the card is actually doing

When a job has a location and a mission date/time, Rotor Rate pulls hourly forecast data for that exact lat/lng and slices it down to the hours your operation will actually occupy. It then computes a summary across that window:

  • Max sustained wind at 10 m (surface)
  • Max wind aloft (~80 m / drone altitude — the one that actually matters for stability)
  • Max gust
  • Probability of precipitation
  • Cloud cover and visibility flags
  • Temperature range (relevant for battery performance — cold days mean shorter flights)

If you haven't entered a mission date and time yet, the card shows a multi-day forecast so you can pick a sensible window. The moment you set the date/time on the job, the card collapses down and highlights the specific window — that's the row to read.

Why "wind aloft" is the number to watch

Surface wind at 10 m is what your phone weather app shows you. It's also what makes you say "feels fine out here" when you step outside.

The number your drone actually feels is wind aloft — the air at the altitude you're flying. At 200–400 ft Above Ground Level (AGL) on a clear day, it's often meaningfully stronger than what you're feeling on the ground. That's why a calm-feeling morning can still pop a wind warning on the drone the minute it climbs out.

Rotor Rate's wind-aloft and gust thresholds adjust based on your planned altitude, which itself is capped by the Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Facility Map (UASFM) ceiling from the Airspace card. So the verdict you see is for the actual mission you're proposing, not a generic one-size-fits-all rating.

The card scores the window:

  • Green — go.
  • Amber — fly with caution; consider time-shifting an hour or two within the day.
  • Red — no-go window; reschedule the job before you commit.

How this changes your quote

A "no-go" verdict doesn't kill the bid — it changes the conversation:

"Tuesday's window looks dicey on wind aloft. I'd quote it for Wednesday morning instead — same price, much higher chance of a clean flight."

That kind of message wins jobs. Clients don't want a hero pilot; they want a deliverable. Being the one who flagged the weather before they did builds trust on the first interaction.

It also protects your margin. The pilot who shows up on the marginal day, scrubs after one battery, and either re-flies for free or eats a half-priced job is the pilot who didn't read the wind-aloft number when they sent the quote.

When to cross-check on UAV Forecast

At the bottom of the Weather card there's a button: Cross-check on UAV Forecast. It hands off to uavforecast.com pinned to your job coordinates. Click it when:

  • The Rotor Rate verdict is amber and you want a second opinion before committing.
  • You need a more granular hour-by-hour view (UAV Forecast's hourly UI is a little richer for picking the exact best hour in a sketchy window).
  • You're flying somewhere with complex microclimates (coastal, mountainous, urban canyons) and you want to see Kp index, satellite count, and visibility broken out separately.
  • The job is high-stakes (mapping, inspection, anything you can't easily re-shoot) and you want a belt-and-suspenders read.

UAV Forecast and Rotor Rate are pulling from broadly compatible underlying models, so they'll usually agree. When they don't, that disagreement itself is the signal — it's a window where the model spread is high, which is exactly when you want a phone call with the client about rescheduling.

My pricing-stage checklist

When I'm building a quote, the Weather card flow is short:

  1. Enter mission date + time on the job.
  2. Read the highlighted-window verdict.
  3. If green, move on — the math in the calculator is good.
  4. If amber, click Cross-check on UAV Forecast for the deeper read; usually I can find a better hour within the same day.
  5. If red, message the client before sending the quote with a proposed alternate date. The quote that lands ten minutes later carries the alternate window in the email body.

That last step is the one that converts. You're not selling them a flight; you're selling them a successful deliverable. The Weather card is one of the cheapest tools in the whole product for raising your win rate, because it lets you make that conversation happen on the very first reply — not after a wasted truck roll.

Pitfalls to avoid

A 360º read means naming where weather decisions still go wrong:

  • Trusting a single source. Every forecast model has bad days. If the verdict is amber and the deliverable is high-stakes, cross-check on a second tool before you commit a client to a date.
  • Reading surface wind only. It's the most common rookie mistake. A 7 mph surface read with a 22 mph wind-aloft figure is a scrub day for a small airframe, full stop.
  • Forgetting battery temperature derating. Below ~40°F (≈4°C), most modern Lithium Polymer (LiPo) batteries lose meaningful capacity. The card flags the temperature range; budget extra batteries and add post-warmup time into your on-site estimate.
  • Quoting first, weather-checking later. The whole point of the card is to let you raise weather risk before a price lands in the client's inbox. Reverse that order and you'll re-quote (or refund) more often than you'd like.
  • Ignoring sunrise/sunset for civil twilight jobs. Part 107 civil-twilight rules require anti-collision lighting visible for 3 statute miles — confirm your lighting setup before you bid a window that brushes either edge.

How this connects to your bid

The point

The Weather card doesn't exist to tell you what the weather is. It exists to tell you whether this specific job, on this specific day, at this specific time is worth committing to at the price you're about to quote. That's a different question — and answering it well, in two clicks, is half the reason the calculator's numbers are worth trusting in the first place.
